Jesse Huth - Founder
Born and raised in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, Jesse has had a close relationship with the outdoors, nature and science even before he was born! His mother was a Science teacher up to the day of his birth and believes that he eavesdropped on all of her classes for those nine months. By the time he could talk he could identify almost every plant that was in range of his "on-the-ground world". As he grew he became an avid collector of rocks & minerals. At the age of three a neighbor introduced him to his small flock of chickens and there was no turning back. After three years of incessant begging, Jesse received a dozen hatching eggs for his sixth birthday.... all 12 hatched. As the birds matured more eggs were set and the flock continued to grow, leading to an over-abundance of eggs for the family. Jesse started his first business "Jesse's Fresh Eggs" and peddled his free-range eggs around the town of Wimberley, TX including supplying Hill Country Natural Foods with healthy eggs. At age ten, he was featured on Texas Country Reporter as a 10-yr old egg entrepreneur, and then on KXAN-tv feature news Out On the Porch with Jim Swift. Over the years, Jesse's chicken advice has been featured in various publications, he started the only 4-H club in Texas devoted to exhibition/backyard chickens, serves on the Poultry committee of the Comal Co. Fair, judges chicken shows and will graduate in Dec '12 from Texas A&M University with a B.S. degree in Poultry Science. Beginning in Jan '13 Jesse will be working on his Master's degree in the field of Poultry Behavior & Welfare at Texas A&M. He is a member of the American Poultry Association, the American Bantam Association and Marans U.S.A.
Jesse's interest in wild bird identification began at age six, with daily before-school trips to the porch of a neighboring birder who taught him to observe silhouettes and field marks. His drive to learn more, quickly led to the Wimberley Birding Society where he was taken under the capable wings of the membership for a lifetime of mentoring. He attended a Travis Audubon Society youth birding camp and followed it up as a mentor of future camps. In 2001 he met Amy Sugeno who mentored his Roughwings team, the TAS Towhees, in the Great Texas Birding Classic and he has continued to compete to the present. Amy also introduced him to Victor Emanuel who is his inspiration to become a world-class birder. Birding over the years with Sandy Komito in High Island, Tx has resulted in a determination to do a Big Year, including Attu. As his Eagle Scout project, Jesse raised $10,000, including a grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority, and designed and over-saw the building of a walk-in bird blind at the Patsy Glenn Refuge in Wimberley. Jesse founded the TAMU Birding Society at Texas A&M University and enjoys outings with club members.
Jesse does educational birding presentations, guided birding trips and bird surveys for property valuations.
In addition to avian pursuits, Jesse fills his time with his interests in fly-fishing, fly tying and amateur astronomy.
